As of 2008, the NYPD has a very small unit of less then 10 officers. Their job is to ride around on bikes and issue citations for traffic infractions. This includes, but is not limited to – assholes parked in bike lanes. The officer I spoke with said that they had not been issued new riding jackets since 1998.

The officer I spoke to (who didn’t want to be named) said the she usually knocks on the rear windshields of vehicles in bike lanes. If they don’t move, she writes them up. 115 bucks baby!
