MEGA POST (Currently 2/3rd Finished)

This is going to be a TOME of a post. I have not hit up this blogzorz with such vigor as I am about to do now in a while. I’m going to get the images in here like crazy, so be ready for that to load also. (Videos not uploaded yet, check post later tonight) I shot the first in a series of events I’ll be doing for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra this month on Friday. They’re good people over there and easy to work with. I was shooting this guy a bunch because he looks like my uncle, but about 3 feet taller. 2

The D90 is about ten steps over the 40x in terms of just about everything. I would argue it’s a better package than the D200, and I’d be very sad if I had bought a D200 in the past few years. Also have been organizing one of the photo hard drives. Here’s an unpublished photo from a larger series.

Smashed up my SWorks Decibel many months ago. Specialized says that Dealers are supposed to do a 20 percent off deal if you bring in your crashed helmet, but so many specialized dealers charge way more then the already pricey $230 MSRP that Specialized lists on their website that it’s hardly worth it. So, I need to try on the Uvex FP1 (pictured here on Gilbert) somehow. Or I’m going with the Decibel in Quickstep colors.

If you haven’t seen this awesome crash right at the begging of the Cycle Smart race this past weekend, DO IT. That kind of carnage attracts Nascar fans to bike races. Speaking of Halloween, Critical Mass (Baltimore) was HUGE. Biggest one in years, apparently. It eventually broke up along Falls Road, like in 2008. Some highlights include having the BPD spotlight us with a helicopter for about 5 minutes Downtown. Luckily that didn’t amount to anything bad. The following night was the Halloween Alleycat. It was small as far as Halloween races and a little goofy too, but the checkpoints were fun. It was short and fast, and I got 1st place and 1st road bike (though some didn’t think the LeMond qualifies as a road bike anymore). I won a large reload bag in pink that my girlfriend promptly acquired. Shouldn’t have let her seen it..

Here’s a video from the Tour de Greater Homewood yesterday.

Look for more frequent posts here as it gets colder and more boring outside.

St. Paul street now has a new bike lane from University to 30ish. it seems like new bike lanes pop up wherever I stay. Watch out suckers or I’ll move into your neighborhood.

I need to get that guy who's followed by bike lanes that are NOT painted in the door zone to move into my neighborhood. How do I get that guy to move here? ;-)
  • door zone schmor zone. 90 percent of doorings can be avoided by riding on the outside line or near it, and watching the cars in front of you for drivers/passengers.

a bike lane is about awareness, and cars usually DONT drive in it.

either way, st paul street is now safer here because you have that much more protection in the form of a solid white line. it's not great but it's better than nothing.

I'm playing the devil's advocate a bit, so don't take my disagreements too much to heart, but:

If it is only safe to ride in 10% of the bike lane on the outside, what does the other 90% of the bike lane signify, the "give-drivers-the-wrong-impression-of-where-i'm-supposed-to-ride" lane? Whether drivers are riding in the same lane as you when you are both going in the same direction is not particularly relevant to safety in urban environments. Whether they are turning right, left or if they are opening their car doors are all very relevant. Bike lanes don't make you any safer from right turns, and more prone to danger from doors, opposite directional left turning cars, as well as merging traffic from the right side.

I'm fine with the bike lanes on University and Roland, as those avenues are extra wide, the parked car doors are 7 feet away and the cyclist is far enough out from the parked cars to be visible to traffic merging from the right side, but 5 foot strips buttressed right up against parked SUVs? I would very much like to see a study of that particular type of bike lane and see the actual effect they have collision statistics. I'm not confident that they are any kind of improvement, and have a concern that they may increase danger.
  • to be fair, the bike lane is pretty damn wide up until 33rd street. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lpq/4093200333/

halfway out in the lane is probably fully out of the door zone..

On an unrelated subject, I'd like to watch that vimeo video of the Homewood ride, but it is set to private.
