Update (May 19th, 2009) : Gabriella Camejo’s dad is reported harassing a MICA staff member at ArtWalk, accuses Kent Miller of “.. blood on his hands”. Update here.

Update (May 7th, 2009) :

The Baltimore Sun has a good piece on the state of this intersection, it’s upsetting and disturbing how long this dangerous intersection has gone without being remarked for pedestrians crossing : Worn Away Crosswalk — Baltimore Sun

An excerpt from the Sun Post :

She called 311 to place a service request last year – and again in February and March. The February call is still listed as open in the system, but no work has been completed. When Heningburg called to follow up, she was told such work gets postponed in poor weather.

Even after a student was hit and killed here, and another seriously injured, as of today NOTHING has been done to make this crosswalk safer. Not even remarking the nearly invisible crosswalk. This is a shame on the part of everyone in Baltimore City gov’t who has any control over this intersection.

Original Post :

A Maryland Institute College of Art student was struck and killed by a vehicle at the intersection of Howard Street and Dolphin street on late sunday evening. Another student was badly injured by the vehicle. Here’s some of MICA president Fred Lazarus’s letter to students on the incident :

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that the MICA community has lost one of our own, senior Gabriella Camejo, a general fine arts major from California, who died after being hit by a car late Sunday evening. Gabriella was walking with another student, senior Kent Miller, a drawing major from Pennsylvania, who was also struck by the vehicle at the intersection of Howard and Dolphin streets. I visited with Kent this morning, and he is in stable condition. His mother, who traveled to Baltimore from Philadelphia early this morning, is at his side.

At this time we do not have any other details about the accident, which is being investigated by the Baltimore City Police Department …

I will always remember how much of a free spirit gabby was. I will always remember her laugh, her smile, gabby meant the world to me not only because she changed my brother for the better, but because she had such an amazing personality. Not enough could be said about how great of a loss this is.

My oldest friend. I always look at that picture of the two of us sitting above my bed. Two young girls bright eyes in our night dresses and think how it is soo cool that out of every one from our past it was our paths that crossed in such a random place. And just as we were beging to reunite our lives you were taken away. She was an amazing soul, so full of live and an amazing sence of herself which is truly rare in poeple today. You will be missed so much Gaby. I hope you are watching over us now smiling and laughing at how gushy we are all getting. I know you are. :)

I could not get this out of my head. I was coming back from DC that night and had seen the aftermath. I was there to help and call 911. This has been a torture to me and my heart goes out to all of you that knew her and Kent Miller. I am deeply saddened to know the outcome as I prayed for them both. All of you have my sympathies.

Oh, I'm speechless. I can't imagine the world without you. I know you're still here. And I told your dad that you never left him, you're here forever, and I have all of our drawings together. Mainly horses everywhere,in my studio, and a drawing of a single blossom of a vase that you did without even lifting a pen in like, 5 seconds, 10 seconds... I love you, I love you, I love you...
  • My family and I drove down from DC and placed some of Gabriella's beloved bean babies, flowers, and toy horse at this horrible intersection. I told Gabriella that I would try and be more like you. You were so special! I miss you so deeply. GABRIELLA:WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU! Your loving Dad, Christopher
  • Wow. My only regret is that I didn't scout Gabriella out & scoop her up & let her know how much Lucien, Badger, Retha, and I missed her and loved her. It was difficult being estranged for the past 4 years yet we respected her space. Regardless, Gabriella was in our heart and soul and this KNOWING continues. Gabriella is God's perfect idea and in that truth, the beauty of her true identity, which to me is spiritual, will lead us forward in a way where we truly experience and share w/the world her ANGEL nature. Gabriella will be deeply missed on the human front, but she is right beside us on our spiritual journey. We love you SO MUCH Gabriella.

Gabriella, we love you forever and will always remember so fondly your kindness and your creativity. You made the world here a better place and we will be at a loss without your sense of calm and your loving manner. I know you will be around to protect and love your mom and Barry and all your friends who cry for you. Thanks for inspiring Sophia and dressing up Duke in those silly costumes-Sophia loved it and you for making the time to be her friend, so few people take such time to be kind like that. WE LOVE YOU....Janice & Sophia
  • Gabby and I were close friends about 8 years ago in Denver. She would always come over to my apartment near Cherry Creek when I was going to school at Metro State. For well over a year we spent a lot of time together. I remember laying out in the sun and swimming at the pool with her, watching movies, and just hanging out -- laughing. I never caught her on a bad day -- ever. I will never forget her smile, it lit up the world, and she's one of the few girls to this day who actually got my dry sense of humor. I regret losing touch with her over the years, especially since I was in DC last year. I was told she had been asking about me in the weeks leading up to the accident. I wish I could have talked to you one more time. Gabby, I would have loved to have stopped by to catch up on times with you -- I'm sure we both have so much to share. And I wish I could turn back the hands of time so I could have somehow stopped what happened that night. Despite our somewhat short time together, you made a lasting impression. And I know I will see you again -- where you will greet me with open arms on a perfect beach, in a better place -- where we'll have all of eternity to laugh, wrestle in the sand, and share stories again. Luv U =) - Jeff

Oh, dear Gabriella. I have just learned about her leaving us today and I am devastated. I have known her since she was a little girl. Picking her from elementary school, to taking her to taco bell and letting her have soda (when her mom wouldn't let her) to playing on the Santa Monica Pier. We had so much fun. I got to see her grow into a beautiful, creative loving soul with a smile that went on for miles. Her inspiration will continue for all of us left behind. She is in the heavens with her sister who now will both look after their mother...may God bless and protect you...

I didn't know Gabriella, but I am a MICA student. What a tragedy. My heart goes out to her friends and family.
  • Am I as bothered by everyone else that this crosswalk is still just as dangerous - or even more dangerous - than it was before?

From a stranger who saw the post:

My heart goes to you all and your family.

The perp of this crime will have to look at himself everyday in the mirror and know he's a cold blooded murderer and not innocent of manslaughter but a murderer. I truly hope they catch him, it makes her passing even more painful this way, BPD CATCH THIS PERSON! Get to work and check all available repair shops for said vehicle, truly the boy can possibly remember?

My prayers to the family and friends.

  • stranger : wasn't it confirmed that a woman accidentally hit the students? my understanding was that it was NOT a hit and run. do you have information suggesting it was?
